One of our dogs is puffing up now and again. The first episode was a few weeks ago, late in evening and he was seen by vet. He was expelling gas. After few visits the vet put it down to suspected partial torsion. He had exploratory op and everything was ok.

Done it couple ot times since.Just a little bit but definetly puffed up. Again this evening after being in van. he was ok, brought into house, kept calm, brought others in (Cool, let him out again and abit misshapened. He did the toilet, burped; rubbed his side like a baby, and he returned to normal shape after short period of time.
Fed 3 times day, instead of usual 2, trying to keep him settled and calm and keeping diary of eating patterns.
He is on a sensitive kibble.

Worrying and unsettling, he appears fine though ( better than me). Appreciate it could get worse or not.

Any help or thoughts appreciated,

Thanks,

Sharon

what a worry!  what brand of kibble is he on?  do you soak it thoroughly before he eats it?  is he a "gulper"

There isn't a chance he is sneekily getting into the food and stuffing himself is there?

When Nao was little he managed to break into his bag of food twice and we didn't know about it till his belly swelled up... then found the tail tail signs of mischief around the food bag.

Also is he fed off the ground or do you use dish holders?  Letting him eat off a rasied dish can often help excess gas problems and its better for avioding gastic problems.

Food is soaked and i've raised the bowl. He was on AG premium, now on RC sensitive from vet. Spoken with his breeder Christine in France, she's spoken to her vet and Catherine has the job of translating the reply. Wait and see.

Thanks,

No probs today.

Translation in progress.....  Cheesy

Give the lovely lad a big cuddle from me!

In my experience it can be triggered by gulping food, but neither of mine who had it were gulpers - in fact dear old Blaidd was a horrendously fussy eater.

If he's burping, then he won't go into torsion, which is the risk factor - just dilation isn't fatal - it's the torsion that's the problem.

The raised dish thing is said to be helpful, but some breeds who are very prone to it also say that a raised dish can be an extra risk factor. It's a real minefield.

In addition to the raised dish/lowered dish thing, you might consider putting a tennis ball into his bowl while he's eating (making sure that he doesn't start munching on the tennis ball, of course!) - some people thinks that it slows down the gulping.

Gosh what a worry...

Do dogs still bloat if they eat meat/bones etc ? Or are they more prone to it on kibble ? I have two youngsters who scare the life out of me as they just inhale their complete food.

Thanks

I was told that if you leave kibble to soak it can ferment, causing bloat, does anyone know if that's fact or fiction, we just give a splash of cold water before putting it down.
Thanks

i was always taught by vets and at college that when a dog is prone to bloat to soak kibble before hand so it cant expand in the dogs stomach.

if it were my dog i would be looking to switching to a raw diet as it is thought that this diet reduces chance of bloat even further.

hope he is ok!

Thanks guys.

Imaliq has been ok the last few days. It is so strange as he went kinda square shaped a couple of times for a short period of time and then burps or has toilet and then he goes back to normal.

I've been soaking the kibble so that it has already expanded before he eats it. I know that it has started to breakdown by then.

I was also thinking about a different diet too. When you see the size a kibble expands to if one has escaped into the sink with water in it. It is quite scary what is in their belly once they have been fed.

I was aware of the risk when you feed them but just got on with it. Now i'm wary for the rest of them at mealtimes, when they drink etc etc  but then i could get like this with absolutely everything! I'm sure i'll start to relax abit more.

He is fine though and enjoying the extra cuddles and attention,

Sharon
