Hi, I hope that somebody may have some ideas!

I have a 14 week old puppy that is itching & scratching himself like crazy.
He has been flea treated so we know that that isn't the problem.
We have also tried a cold tar shampoo and various ointments but they don't seem to help.
I have even changed the washing powder for his bedding to that is Eco friendly to see if this is the problem.
The only other thing I can think to change is his food! He is currently on Chudley puppy as this is what he was on and seemed to be doing fine.
Maybe its just the change in the weather?
Can anybody suggest anything else?  Huh Huh Huh

Thanks
Lisa

hi lisa,

you will think i'm mad when i suggest this but does he wear a collar???  when our puppy of a similar age has his collar on you would think he had fleas!  he constantly scratches.  take the collar off, and he stops.  he just needs time to get used to a collar.

other options,  what did you treat him for fleas with??  have you see any??
also, the shampoos may be irritating him and making him itchy.  if he has been fine on his food up to now its unlikely to be that.

have you aded anything else to his food as  a treat??

is he losing any fur at all or getting bald patches??

Thanks for that Lis, you brightened up my day, as putting a show chain on some of my dogs has the same effect, but guess they will never get used to that, with the amount of showing I do  Grin Grin

Hi there,
Some puppies can have a mange mite called demodex passed from the mother, You can't see them without skin scapings being taken and looked at under the microscope. also if the puppy is scratching it can break the skin and leave it open to bacterial infections of the skin.
If it goes on i would let the vet check it out.

Hi, thanks for your suggestions

He doesn't wear a collar at the moment so its not that thats bothering him.
We have only bathed him twice in 3 weeks and that was only after the itching started, and we diluted the shampoo right down.
We used frontline spray to treat him for fleas and this also didn't seem to bother him.
He as been to the vet 10 days after we had him and we mentioned it to him, but he didn't seem to think it was a problem.
He does seem a little better today but maybe thats because it has been a lot cooler. He seems to itch around his neck and under his tummy all the areas that get a bit warm when he is sleeping and where there is still a bit of extra skin for him to grow into.
I did notice that he was sleeping upside down last night, a bit like the big boys maybe he is learning off them the best way to keep a bit cooler.

I will keep you updated on the itching.

Thanks

HI Lisa,
IF you have ruled out any infestations etc, you could try denes greenleaf tablets. Totally natural but when one of mine had a slight reaction to a different type of booster than she had been given before (different vet practice), that is what I used.

Hi Lisa

One of our boys had same problem when he was a pup and our vet told us not to use any shampoo at all as it is not good for the skin so we stopped using it and just gave him a good old scrub with water and the itching did stop.

I know you will think I am mad because we have not had a summer Roll Eyes
But, it has been quite warm and humid, many years ago one of our dogs had this problem and it was because the dog was overheating. I can't for the life of me think what the vet said but I know we had good old rock sulpher in his water and he was fine from then on.  Just a thought

I was gonna suggest Hypo allergenic food but youve already changed his diet  Grin Like the name too  Cheesy

Off topic ish Re the demodex mange, is it the same as demodectic mange? If so this can only be found by taking under the skin samples to my knowledge. My old jack russel had it as a pup.
