Under optimal conditions, probably longer than that.  Bramble the vegetarian border collie was still going strong at 29 years of age http://dogsinthenews.com/issues/0209/articles/020918a.htm

And on the same subject, is everyone here taking part in Lynn Harrison's husky age survey?  Email Lynn at brushbow at a o l . com for a form, which you can email back to her.  She wants details of all Sibes who have died and all those still alive who are over 12 years of age.

It'll be interesting to see the results.

I only read it for abut 15 minutes and up to that point the gyst of it seems to be that dog food is made out of dogs (and cats) and 25% dog poo.  He hasn't said what his wonder product is yet.

it could be......chances are they put all sorts of rubbish in dog food.  but lets face it....has it done your dogs any harm?Huh??  do they eat it and look healthy enough...... then what does it matter whats in it?Huh?

i have to admit though, one of the main reasons for switching to raw feeding was so i know exactly what my dogs are getting. i do believe there are possibly things in dog food that don't need to be there and that they dont always use the best quality ingredients.

that said, we would never say to someone not feed kibble.  ours did ok on it for years.  if your dog eats it and looks happy and healthy then why change?  every dog is different and different things will suit different dogs

He produces an interesting argument, but unless dogs fed on kibble can be studied against lont term fed BARF dogs, on a large scale, it is very difficult to prove that the general lifespan of a dog is being cut shot by kibble, and apparent death through natural causes as actually a result of slow poisining over the dogs full life span, which I believe is what he is suggesting.

Skimmed through it, but he seems to be selling book(s) he has written, one of which includes the NINE dog food brands he would trust, wonder how much the companies paid for a mention!!!!

Thing is most dogs used to be fed naturally - on table scraps etc, meat from the butchers, bones... I wonder if dogs lived longer then (pre-kibble)? The jack russell I had when I was a kid lived to about 18 years, eating more or less what we did but she was a tough little so-and-so... Interestingly enough she was never vaccinated after her initial puppy vaccinations and survived getting knocked down by a moped and having a front leg reattached by micro-surgery !

Our old collie when i was a kid was mostly butcher scraps and table left over fed, she did not live any longer, my mums dog in the war was the same, usual lifespan, also my dogs now get a lot of scraps and raw food and all that happens is they have so much energy they knock themselves about Roll Eyes

our family cross breed lived til it was nearly 20 was with us 17 years and was a few years old when we got it, fed table scraps i think tinned food was a luxury to it Smiley we thought we were well posh giving it peg chum  Huh ha ha. Think she had a operation when i was a kid something to do with her kidneys or something (all i remember it was to be put down or the weeks wages to save it and my mum  Grin saved her Wink) but anyhows she got knocked down by a car, in front of me when i was nearly 15 Cry but table scraps and no vaccinations but then again she was a medium/small dog Undecided the only reason i feed mine high quality dog food is they are working animals and i dont wanna mess with things, leave it to the professionals Cool

i have read alot about pet foods and have visited the pedigree factory while at college. i feed my own dogs barf as i believe that it is better for them as i know what they are getting and what they require.

i think alot of what he said is true as the standard in america are different from here. although saying that the standard here are not what they should be.

Scare Mongering? Absolutely.
I have a brother -in- law who works in the food hygiene industry and.... I kid you not, he has colleagues who taste dog food for a living Shocked
I doubt that they would be allowed to do that if it caused all the horrors this guys claims.
O if only I could guarantee I wouldn't die of something horrible or live to 132 just by not eating processed food, Eh right!!!!
